Contrast

Contrast is an ambiguous term that applies to several related ideas, where a high contrast represents a large difference between two colors. Contrast is usually assumed to be Luminance Contrast, where a high contrast indicates a relative difference in luminance between two colors, regardless of chromaticity. On the other hand, Color Contrast indicates the distance between chromaticities of two colors, either regarding or regardless of luminance.

Contrast Sensitivity defines an individual’s threshold ability to see contrast between two different colors.

The contrast function of image processing software affects image brightness. Increasing contrast will brighten colors above the Contrast Center, and darken colors below the contrast center.
