Pinopsin

A ciliary opsin, which is the closest phylogenetic relative to the vertebrate visual opsins (the Rhodopsin and Photopsins in your retina). Pinopsin is a blue-light sensitive opsin similar to Rhodopsin and has been found in the pituitary glands of birds, fish, amphibians, etc. It has not been found in mammals and may have been one of the opsins lost during the Nocturnal Bottleneck. Its function is not well understood.
