Tritan

The “third” type of colorblindness (after Protan and Deutan) that acts as an umbrella term for Tritanomaly and Tritanopia. Tritan CVD is associated with the blue cone and affects the blue-yellow Opponent Channel (generally a weakening of the blue stimulation).

Tritan defects can be Congenital if the gene for the S-Opsin is affected, or Acquired through aging or trauma to the retina. Both Congenital and Acquired defects can be progressive, i.e. they worsen over time.

Tritans are recorded as being much rarer than the other types of CVD (1 in 10,000), but the prevalence of Tritans in the colorblind community is much higher, a phenomenon called the Tritan Epidemic.

The Colors of Confusion for Tritans are:

  • Yellow / White
  • Blue / Green
  • Dark Blue or Violet / Black
  • Violet / Yellow-Green
  • Red / Rose

A Tritan is also an individual who has a Tritan defect.
