CAD Test

The Color Assessment and Diagnosis (CAD) Test was known previously at The City University Dynamic Colour Vision Test. It is a video-based screening tool for CVD devised in 1994 (originally described in Barbur 1994) specifically for the aviation industry. It is fundamentally different from the standard City University Test.

In the video, a colored square moves across a neutral-colored background. The examinee must follow the square with their finger, or indicate the direction of travel with buttons. The color of the square is constantly changing, and as the hue of the square passes through the Neutral Line for a given type of CVD, the examinee will lose the ability to track the square. The time of the video when the square is lost indicates the type of CVD. It was the spiritual predecessor for the Color Blind Check app, and like that app, uses dynamic luminance noise to decrease the possibility of the examinee using luminance contrast to see the square.

A sample video is available on YouTube, but it is over-compressed and cannot be used for actual screening.
